Tutto d’un botto

Tutto d’un botto
anche la musica del negozietto è cambiata.
Tutto ha un’aria inquietante.
Gli uccellini che si accendono quando
vado tra gli scaffali, così il padrone,
suppongo, sappia sempre dove sono,
pregano acri. Le lucine tremano
come fossero sull’acqua. La sua
amica, con quel teschio fluorescente
in mano, riorganizza le figure
ferme sui calendari.

Vado via con il nuovo tostapane.
Il faccino sbavato di Halloween
sull’etichetta.

All of a Sudden

All of a sudden
even the music in the little shop has changed.
Everything feels unsettling.
The little birds that light up when
I walk between the shelves, so the owner,
I suppose, always knows where I am,
pray, acrid. The small lights tremble
as if they were on water. His
friend, holding that fluorescent skull
in her hand, rearranges the figures
fixed on the calendars.

I leave with the new toaster.
The smeared Halloween face
on the label.
